The Necessity to Speak

After reading Sam Hamill’s short story “The Necessity to Speak,” I have come to the realization how rotten this world has become. Our government feels that with violence the problems should be resolved and in the process we show our children that being violent the problems should be resolved. I ask when the cycle will stop. We do have the necessity to speak out and express our feelings. Sam Hamill has experience from firsthand the need to speak up and express his feelings through writing. And just as he expresses that touch is the primary language of emotions, it is how the person or child is being touched it can mean so many different things depending on how it’s done. Our society today is so fast paced that we forget about the importance of affection and when we are so involved in our routine lives the children get lost in the shuffle and when we are annoyed and they are acting like children we forget that they are having fun and hit or spank because we are irritated from our work, life or situation and somehow punish them for saying the wrong things or expressing themselves badly. We must educate the parents so that in return we could guide our children in better decision making when it comes to forming a healthy relationship. As I read the story I couldn’t help but to think of the thousands of women that are beaten in their relationships and I often wonder when will they take a stand and refuse to be treated that way. Consequently, the need to speak is a must and hopefully someone will listen.
